2012 National Scholar Update

Alex is in her second semester at Texas State University and she is loving every minute of the college experience.  She is enrolled in core classes this year, and while some have been challenging, Alex has maintained a GPA of over 3.0.

Alex is participating in extracurricular activities on campus, one of which is her involvement in “The Quidditch Association at Texas State (bobQATS)”.  “This is a registered student organization at Texas State University that is devoted to playing the sport of “quidditch” and sponsoring social events centered on the book series, Harry Potter.  The members have a choice to participate in social, as well as, sporting events.  Alex is a member of the intercollegiate (IQA) team and participates in practice and competitive events.

Through her involvement in this sport, Alex has been able to travel, meet new people, and get physical activity.  We are proud of Alex and her accomplishments at Texas State.  Keep up the great work!

Sister to Sister - Making Connections the Engineering Way!

On Saturday March 23, Girls Inc. and TCU’s Engineering Department hosted the annual Sister to Sister Summit for young girls to come discover possible engineering careers. The day was filled with many exciting activities. The girls were divided into different age groups. The girls were apprehensive about their groups at first, but they quickly bonded with their new friends!

Together they designed blueprints using computer software (CAD), learned about batteries and circuits, created spinning signs, constructed bridges, created their own lip glosses and played around with gack in the chemistry lab. The girls got to meet Dr. Bittle, a female engineering professor, who is an advocate for women in engineering. She was more than happy to encourage the girls throughout the day.

The girls also toured the TCU campus and marveled at the beautiful tulips that bloomed across the university. In addition, they questioned the TCU students about their academic experiences and learned about the responsibilities of being a college student. At the end of the day, the girls enjoyed a delicious lunch provided by the Excel Center.  They also watched a spectacular laser-light show presented by the TCU students. We are very passionate about getting girls to pursue STEM careers, so this was an excellent chance for us to encourage our girls to be enthusiastic about engineering!

There were many positive comments made throughout the day.  One participant said, "TCU is a really nice campus. I didn't know engineering was more hands on than sitting at a desk." -Emily - age 12

Many, many thanks to Dr. Bittle and her engineering students at TCU!  We had great time learning about engineering!

EHHS at UGM

The Union Gospel Mission of Tarrant County is an organization dedicated to providing “love, hope, respect, and a new beginning” to the homeless of Tarrant County. They have been serving the Fort Worth area for over 100 years!

This week, five of our girls from Eastern Hills High School dedicated three hours of their evening to serving the homeless at UGM. The girls served food and distributed meals to each person. We were very impressed with how the girls worked tirelessly in fulfilling their given responsibilities.

UGM appreciated their hard work as well. One staff member described them as a “quiet storm” because they served the meals and cleaned up rapidly without any protest.

Most importantly, the homeless appreciated the girls’ kindness. “You are awesome,” a boy said to one of our EHHS girls. Our girls are amazing and we couldn’t be any prouder of them. This was an excellent opportunity for the girls to give back to their community and work with the friendly staff at UGM. We would definitely love to help again in the future!
